NPPA Caps Trade Margins at 30% on 137 Anti-Cancer Drugs: Prices May Fall up to 70% from November 9

In a major relief for cancer patients across India, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has capped trade margins at 30% of the maximum retail price (MRP) on 137 identified non-scheduled anti-cancer drugs, invoking its extraordinary powers under Paragraph 19 of the Drugs (Prices Control) Order (DPCO), 2013. The gazette notification was issued on October 17, 2026, and revised MRPs take effect from November 9, 2026.

The intervention follows an expert committee under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), which recommended the 137 drugs for trade margin rationalisation. Depending on existing price structures, MRPs could fall by up to 70%, building on NPPA's 2019 pilot that cut prices of 42 anti-cancer drugs by up to 90%. The covered medicines include widely used immunotherapy and targeted therapy drugs such as pembrolizumab, nivolumab, durvalumab, osimertinib, bevacizumab, olaparib, denosumab and topotecan. Manufacturers must report revised prices within seven days of the notification, and consumers can verify them on the Pharma Sahi Daam app and the NPPA website.

For pharmacy students, this is a landmark case study in drug price regulation in India: it shows how Paragraph 19 of DPCO 2013 lets NPPA act in public interest beyond the scheduled-drugs list, and how trade margin rationalisation directly improves medicine access and affordability.

Alembic Gets USFDA Final Approval for Ciprofloxacin-Dexamethasone Ear Suspension: 246th ANDA

Alembic Pharmaceuticals has received final approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) for its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for Ciprofloxacin and Dexamethasone Otic Suspension USP, 0.3%/0.1% - a generic equivalent of Ciprodex Otic Suspension marketed by Sandoz Inc. The fixed-combination ear drop is indicated for acute otitis media in children aged six months and older with tympanostomy tubes, and for acute otitis externa in children, adults and the elderly.

Citing IQVIA data, the company pegged the US market for this product at about $110 million for the twelve months ended June 2026. With this clearance, Alembic's cumulative USFDA ANDA tally reaches 246 approvals (226 final and 20 tentative), underscoring the company's steady execution in the competitive US generics market.

For Indian pharmacy students, the ANDA pathway is essential learning: a generic must demonstrate therapeutic equivalence to the reference listed drug, and each final approval expands a company's commercial footprint in the world's largest generics market.

Natco Launches Generic Carboplatin in the US with Chennai's Teyro Labs to Ease Shortage

Natco Pharma has launched Carboplatin Injection - a generic version of Paraplatin - in the United States through its subsidiary Natco Pharma USA LLC, in manufacturing collaboration with Chennai-based Teyro Labs Pvt Ltd. The launch is aimed at addressing a critical shortage of the drug in the US market.

Carboplatin is a platinum-based chemotherapy agent indicated for advanced ovarian carcinoma, including first-line combination therapy and palliative treatment of recurrent disease after prior chemotherapy. The company cited industry sales data estimating US sales of about $27.8 million for the twelve months ended June 2026.

This story connects two important themes for pharmacy students: drug shortages in regulated markets, where even essential oncology injectables can run short, and the growing role of Indian manufacturers - including South India's Chennai pharma cluster - in stabilising global supply chains for critical medicines.

China's Hansoh Pharma Signs $15 Billion ADC Licensing Deal with Roche

China's Hansoh Pharmaceutical Group has entered a collaboration and licensing agreement with Roche covering a broad portfolio of antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) programs, potentially worth more than $15 billion. Hansoh will receive $400 million upfront and a $110 million first-anniversary payment, plus development, regulatory and commercial milestones and tiered royalties.

Under the deal, Hansoh will lead early development through global Phase Ia trials; Roche then takes over worldwide development and commercialisation, excluding Greater China (mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan), where Hansoh retains rights. The pact is the second ADC collaboration between the two companies, following last year's deal on a colorectal cancer ADC. Roche, which already sells the ADCs Kadcyla and Polivy, is leaning on external dealmaking to rebuild its oncology pipeline ahead of patent cliffs.

For pharmacy students, ADCs are one of the most important modern oncology concepts: monoclonal antibodies linked to cytotoxic payloads that deliver chemotherapy directly to tumour cells - a "guided missile" approach that improves the therapeutic index of cancer treatment.

Russia Registers Nimolancim: First Nimotuzumab Cancer Therapy, Made by Cuba's CIM

Russia's Health Ministry has registered Nimolancim (nimotuzumab), the first nimotuzumab-containing anti-cancer drug in the country. The anti-EGFR monoclonal antibody is produced by Cuba's Center of Molecular Immunology (CIM), with the registration certificate valid from October 6, 2026 to 2031.

The drug is indicated for adult patients with specific malignancies, including metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the oesophagus, late-stage head and neck tumours, glioblastoma multiforme and anaplastic astrocytoma. Nimotuzumab blocks epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signalling that drives tumour growth, and it is noted for a favourable toxicity profile compared with other anti-EGFR antibodies such as cetuximab.

This is a notable South-South pharma story: Cuban biotechnology entering the Russian market. Pharmacy students should note how nimotuzumab - already approved in Cuba, India, China and several other countries for head and neck cancer and glioma - keeps expanding its global regulatory footprint, and how EGFR-targeted monoclonal antibodies fit into modern oncology pharmacotherapy.

FDA Grants Accelerated Approval to Dostarlimab for Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer

On October 19, 2026, the US FDA granted accelerated approval to dostarlimab (Jemperli, GSK) for adults with stage II or III locally advanced rectal cancer that is microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H) or mismatch repair deficient (dMMR). It is the first and only immunotherapy approved for this population in the US.

The approval rests on the AZUR-1 phase 2 trial (n=154), in which patients received dostarlimab 500 mg intravenously every three weeks for nine cycles. The objective response rate was 79%, and 47% of evaluable patients achieved a sustained clinical complete response at 12 months - meaning many patients could be managed without surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy. The application had received Fast Track, Breakthrough Therapy and Priority Review designations, plus a National Priority Voucher that brought the decision ahead of the February 2027 PDUFA date.

For pharmacy students, this is a textbook example of biomarker-driven oncology: MSI-H/dMMR status predicts response to PD-1 blockade, and dostarlimab - an anti-PD-1 monoclonal antibody - is converting a traditionally surgery-heavy cancer into one where immunotherapy alone can achieve durable complete responses.

EMA Panel Recommends Rasonque for Advanced Pancreatic Cancer After Prior Therapy

The European Medicines Agency's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) adopted a positive opinion on October 15, 2026, recommending marketing authorisation for Rasonque (daraxonrasib) - oral tablets from Revolution Medicines - as monotherapy for adults with metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma who have received at least one prior systemic therapy. The final decision now rests with the European Commission.

Daraxonrasib is a RAS GTPase family inhibitor: it binds cyclophilin A to form a complex that disrupts RAS signalling, killing cancer cells and slowing tumour growth. In the pivotal phase 3 RASolute 302 trial (500 patients), median overall survival was 12.4 months on Rasonque versus 6.7 months on standard chemotherapy, with median progression-free survival of 7.2 versus 3.6 months. The review was expedited under EMA's Cancer Medicines Pathfinder project in under 150 days. The drug, already FDA-approved in the US in August 2026, would be the first broad RAS-targeted treatment for pancreatic cancer in the EU.

Pharmacy students should pay attention to the pharmacology here: RAS proteins were long considered "undruggable," and daraxonrasib's tri-complex mechanism represents a breakthrough in targeting RAS-addicted cancers - a concept likely to appear in advanced pharmacology curricula.

Conclusion

October 20, 2026 was a day where regulation, innovation and access converged. India's NPPA showed how price regulation can directly cut cancer treatment costs by up to 70%, while Alembic and Natco demonstrated Indian industry's growing grip on the US generics and shortage-relief markets. Globally, the Hansoh-Roche $15 billion ADC pact signalled where oncology R&D money is flowing, Russia's Nimolancim registration highlighted South-South biotech trade, and two landmark approvals - dostarlimab for rectal cancer and Rasonque for pancreatic cancer - pushed immunotherapy and RAS-targeted therapy deeper into mainstream oncology. For pharmacy students, the takeaway is clear: understanding drug pricing policy, the ANDA pathway, monoclonal antibody pharmacology and biomarker-driven therapy is no longer optional - it is the core of modern pharmacy practice.
